Gaten Matarazzo bio

Early life & theatre beginnings

Gaten grew up in New Jersey after being born in Connecticut and started performing on stage as a child. He made his professional debut on Broadway and in touring productions, appearing (among other roles) as Benjamin in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and as Gavroche in Les Misérables, which gave him early acting and musical-theatre experience.

Breakout role & popularity

Matarazzo rose to international fame playing Dustin Henderson on Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things. His performance — noted for humour, warmth and strong comic timing — made him one of the show’s most beloved characters and established him as a recognizable young star across TV and streaming audiences. The series’ large global audience and long run have been central to his popularity.

Film, hosting and other projects

Beyond Stranger Things, Gaten has expanded into film and other screen work: he has appeared in movies and lent voice work to animated projects, co-starred in coming-of-age and comedic films, and hosted Netflix’s hidden-camera series Prank Encounters. He has also explored writing, producing and directing interests as part of a broader creative trajectory.

Health, advocacy & public role

Gaten was born with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD), a rare genetic condition that affects bone and dental development. He has been open about living with CCD and uses his platform to raise awareness and funds for related causes (including work with the CCD community and charity efforts). His candour about the condition has become an important part of his public identity and advocacy.
