Amanda Seyfried was born and raised in Allentown. Her mother, Ann (née Sander), worked as an occupational therapist, and her father, Jack Seyfried, worked as a pharmacist. She has an older sister, Jennifer. Public biographical sources describe her ancestry as predominantly German with smaller amounts of English, Scots-Irish and Welsh heritage.

Seyfried began modeling as a child and started acting in soap operas as a teenager before breaking out on film.
