Jason Joseph Namakaeha Momoa was born August 1, 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
He is the son of Joseph Momoa, a painter of Native Hawaiian descent, and Coni (née Lemke) Momoa, a photographer whose family background includes German, Irish and Pawnee ancestry. Six months after his birth his parents divorced and he was raised by his mother in Norwalk, Iowa, while spending summers in Hawaii.

Momoa’s mixed Hawaiian and continental-U.S. heritage has been repeatedly noted in profiles and in his own public remarks; his Polynesian roots and time spent in Hawaii have strongly influenced his identity and some of the projects he chooses.

He began his career after being discovered as a model in Hawaii and later moved into television and film (notable roles include Baywatch: Hawaii, Game of Thrones, and Aquaman), building a public image that often connects back to his island origins.
